The Mermaid and the Hare

Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots

Picture
Mary Stuart, born Dec 8 1542.
Daughter of King James V of Scotland and his consort, Mary of Guise.
Tall, beautiful and refined, she is not only Queen of Scotland but
also Queen of France through her first marriage to Francis and as a granddaughter
of Henry VII  lays claim to the English throne.
Mary only returned to Scotland in August 1561 following Francis' death.
In her short reign she has had to contend with the religious upheaval
caused by the Reformation, personified by the preacher John Knox.
Her nobility have also been troublesome, and mostly in the pay of
England's Queen Elizabeth.
To provide an heir Mary marries Henry Lord Darnley in 1565.  The marriage
has the desired result, but does not bring her happiness as Darnley is
fuelled by personal ambition and resents her ascendency over him.  After his
shocking murder she is thrown into a turmoil of fear and mistrust while events
begin to spiral out of control.
